18th century Italian margin mirror with carved wood, gilt frames decorated with an alternating curling acanthus leaf and shell design. Between the inner and outer frames, the mirror is fitted with thin panels of mottled grey mercury glass which provides a contrast to the central mercury glass, which has some age in the form of shading but sparkles beautifully across the whole mirror. The mirror is supported by a pair of carved and gilded lion's heads and, because they are hand-carved, they have slightly different expressions which is intriguing. Hung as an overmantel, the lion's heads would become a stunning feature.
