Early 20th century French Bistro mirror with outcurving, burnished, watergilt frame, circa 1920s. After many years of being subjected to changing temperatures, the gilt frame has developed a very fine and attractive crackle finish - which is completely stable. The gilding also wraps around the outside edges and, where the gilding has thinned, the warm terracotta bole is showing through, mainly around the edge closest to the glass where it would have been cleaned more often. The original, bevelled glass has some age mostly in the form of little dark dots, nevertheless gives an excellent reflection and this mirror can be hung portrait, as photographed, or landscape.
