Large, French, Directoire period mirror (1789-1804) with wide, gilt, reeded frame and original mercury glass with some age. Where this mirror has been cleaned for over 200 years, the gilding has thinned revealing some of the red bole beneath as well as the horizontal brighter gold lines across the frame where the sheets of gold leaf overlapped when they were first applied. The age in the glass is mostly around the outside edges where the mirror plate was handled when it was fitted into the frame. An extraordinarily contemporary looking mirror for its age.
