19th century rectangular French mirror, circa 1840, with etched gilt outcurving frame decorated at each corner and mid-frame with raised floral and foliate designs and also with scrolling acanthus leaf decoration running over the glass along the inside edge. Where the gilt has thinned through years of cleaning, the warm red tones of the bole beneath are showing through and the gilding has warm brown tones suggesting that this mirror was originally hung above a fireplace. The original, mercury glass is in very good condition with just a little age and sparkles. The mirror can be hung portrait (as photographed) or landscape and would work well as an overmantel as well as a wall mirror.
