Large, late 18th century, French margin mirror with stunning decoration of large, scrolling acanthus leaves around the outer frame. The high cartouche has a little cherub sitting in the centre of a shell and there are two more cherubs sitting at each lower corner, dangling their toes. Counteracting the charming cherubs is a bearded male face - perhaps Baccus or the Green Man - which appears mid-centre at the top of the mirror and, in larger form, mid centre at the base. A bird sits at each top corner and the outer and inner frame are linked with beautifully carved acanthus leaves. The inner frame has a central flower within a linked oval design. The original, bevelled, mercury glass has age throughout the central piece, giving a soft reflection, but the side sections are clearer. A rare and fabulous find.
